Handbuilding 101
This beginner-friendly 6-week pottery class guides you through the fundamentals of handbuilding, surface decoration, and glazing techniques — no experience necessary. Whether you’re brand new to clay or looking to improve your technique, this class is perfect for those who enjoy working with their hands and want to explore the sculptural side of ceramics.
Over six sessions, you’ll learn to design, build, fire and glaze 4-5 functional pieces using slab, coil, and pinch techniques. You’ll also explore surface design, and glazing methods to make your handbuilt pieces uniquely yours.
What You’ll Learn:
Slab, pinch, and coil construction techniques
Mug design and handle attachment
Surface design methods (texturizing, carving, slip work)
Basics of glaze application
Studio best practices and finishing skills
Class Details:
Length: 6 weeks (1 class per week)
Class Time: ~2.5 hours per session
Open Studio -8 hours per week
Skill Level: Beginners to Intermediate
Materials: All clay, tools, and glazes included
Finished Work: Students will leave with 4-5 fully glazed pieces and a few other surprises too
